My neighbor upstairs runs an Airbnb out of his apartment, which has led to many interesting and exciting situations for me. Well, I say ��exciting’, mostly I mean ‘inconvenient’ and sometimes ‘hilarious.’

Last month I discovered that, while I on the ground floor have a one-bedroom with a tiny office, my upstairs neighbor has 4 bedrooms on two floors that he rents by himself for about a billion US dollars, so it makes perfect sense that he would run an Airbnb, to recoup some of his costs. I imagine it takes a strength of character when you live in an Airbnb, because personally, I don’t want people in my house. That’s why I moved to my own place at 36; I’d had enough. My only roommates now are two very attractive and high-quality felines, who will be introduced in more detail in a later blog post.

Anyway, the Airbnb. The first thing I noticed once this started was that I was constantly jumping whenever someone was coming through the front gate and tromping up the stairs, which was frequent. This is due to my anticipation of my many online purchases. (I purchase many things online because 1) it’s fun to receive things in the mail and 2) I don’t like to leave my house—there’s weather out there, and also bugs.) So: many comings and goings and creakings of the gate.

The second thing I noticed occurred one day when I heard some rattling outside my door. That’s odd, I thought, I’m not expecting any guests. Actually, my thought process was more like Aaaaaa, someone’s trying to break into my apartment! (My upstairs neighbor had been robbed a couple months prior, so this was a totally rational and normal and not-overreactive thing to panic about.) I am Extremely Brave™ (No.), so I went to the door and opened it to discover a hapless traveler with a large rolling suitcase attempting to open the lockbox I hung outside my door. Much relieved, I informed the traveler that the lockbox he was looking for was upstairs.

(Sidenote about the lockbox: I hung it up shortly after moving in because of the time I locked myself out. I was trying this cool thing called “Carrying stuff in my pockets like a dude” due to extreme gender dysphoria, and I left my keys inside my apartment. My landlord was kind enough to charge me $25 to unlock my door, and I ordered the lockbox as soon as I got inside. $25! ::snarling noises::)

The third point of excitement occurred late one night when a knock came at my door around 11:30pm. At the door stood an older butch woman who had run into the same problem as I had: she’d locked her keys inside the apartment, in this case the Airbnb. Unable to get in contact with my neighbor, she was trapped outside. I volunteered to text him and in exchange she offered me a beer. I feel guilty about not offering to let her kip on my air mattress, but, as previously stated, I don’t like to have people in my house.

Finally we come to the real issue of neighboring an Airbnb: too-generous guests. This sounds counterintuitive, so let me explain. As I mentioned, I like to receive packages in the mail so I can open presents I ordered for myself. However, due to Chicago being weird (in my experience as a former Bostonian), my ground floor apartment being a “1” and the upstairs apartment being a “2” is apparently unusual. Typically, I’ve been told, “1” is upstairs. So despite the very clear and large numeral “2” on my neighbor’s mailbox, everyone likes to deliver my stuff up the stairs. The too-nice Airbnb-ers see these packages and say to themselves, Aha! A package for my host! and without checking the name on the package, helpfully carry them inside and lock the door. I am left bereft, knowing my package has arrived but unable to access, for instance, a box of lightbulbs (listen, I know. Adults get excited about the weirdest things).

There's something called the IndieWeb, or WesternWeb, or SmallWeb, whatever you wanna call it, which is the concept of going outside from social media and focus on personal websites.

The Problem with Social Media

I just think it is too much. I never really was a fan of posting on platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and even things such as Mastodon and Pixelfed, and Tumblr I mostly like because it is the most "social-media-less" of the bunch. These platforms feel like you need to post something to other people, even if you don't care about it, there's a reason every one of these have some "like", "follow" and "trending" feature. And sometimes, I just want a space for myself and my hobbies y'know?

Using Tumblr has been great, but it still has that features and to be completely honest, its editor is kinda shit, and the conversion from Markdown to NPF (Neue Post Format, Tumblr's format) is not the greatest (Lately also, with some dramas I saw about moderation and the whole WordPress shenanigans, I don't really know the future).

However, I also know the usefulness of these platforms. Having an algorithm to recommend things is way convenient than trying to find things yourself, and can really make you know about a topic or art you would have never thought about looking into. And I would be hypocritical if I said that I didn't find people to talk with and make friendships. Also, platforms such as Mastodon and Pixelfed with their federation functionality, and BlueSky with its customizable feeds, are pushing into a more healthy and better social media experience personally.

Social media for me is the place if I want to consume in mass and show in mass what I do, since in its very nature, everything is about massive interactions and presence.

But never there was an actual place for me and my projects, until now.

When I started having memories, around the year 12.010, the old internet was kinda dying. If you didn't know, before social media, people still interacted and posted things, in their own websites. There wasn't a central place you saw every single post or media, if you wanted to follow someone, you followed by seeing their websites on the regular, and interacted with them via e-mail, XMPP, Internet Relay Chat (IRC, which is what Twitch uses for its chats), and if the website was fancy, a direct inbox or comments section. Websites were found by just pure curiosity clicking on hyperlinks and jumping from site to site, or used a search engine (like Google, before it became shit) to find personal websites about a specific topic.

Even though I never actually lived this internet, I kinda want it back. Instead of a small solar system of big planets and center, I want a constellation of multiple solar systems and starts.

And I can! These personal websites and ways of interacting with the internet still exist, just in smaller communities. There are still ways of creating your simple website and talking with people from others without the use of social media.

No likes, follows, recommendations if you don't want to. No big moderation team. No advertisement. No corporation controlling the content you put out there.

I want to try it, I want to learn about it more.

Since, being totally honest, I'm kinda hypocritical of all of this. Because even though I know about this side of the internet existing for a good while now, I haven't really put the effort into going there more often. Mostly because I think it stills too inconvenient.

The Web For the future

So I kinda want to try to improve it, not because I'm special or know better, but because I like to create tools for myself and know damn well that if this shit is inconvenient for someone tech-savy like me, it is even more for people who don't are.

I like this side of the internet, and want to make it more accessible and maybe find a good middle ground between social media and personal websites.

MY REFLECTION IN E-TECH

Learning about new things can make our talents and skills more enhanced. Doing things can make us prepared for something that is bigger, since my alternative course is Information Technology. At first, we are still clueless about the activity for the reason that we are clueless in making a website, creating a PowerPoint presentation about our family tree, specially making infographics in canva, making the activities like creating an account in Blogger, Weebly, tumblr, square space, medium and jetpack, and specially making our own website in wordpress.

While doing the said tasks, I feel challenged at the same time. The said tasks are a bit difficult because I don't have enough experience in doing that. I am also happy because I learned something new in the said activity, like creating our website and exploring other social media platforms. Doing new things, like creating an account and making our own website can make our minds sharp. Expanding our knowledge or exercising our minds can make the tasks easier. It may be a bit difficult but at least we're trying to do or accomplish it.

When doing the task I've come to a problem where some apps are broken and not working properly and sometimes "bugging", What's really concerning is the internet connection, it is so slow that sometimes i download an app it just doesn't download due to a slow internet connection. On my website, i put things in there about me, my family tree, I've put everything there, all of our activities like creating an account on Facebook, Telegram, Instagram, Tiktok, Pinterest, WhatsApp, Viber, Threads, X. Some of those social media platforms are easy to make an account because i already created an account.

On my wordpress website, sir told us to make a website that will represent as our portfolio. I've put uncommon Filipino words like :

To summarize everything that had be stated so far or in conclusion, word press and mailmerge in Microsoft word taught me a lot, for example: creating your own website using some website can be frustrating and need money, not like word press, it is free and reliable.
